Negotiators make progress on EU budget from 2014-20

The EU budget commissioner has indicated that ministers and MEPs are progressing towards an agreement on the overall budget from 2014 to 2020, following a meeting of national finance ministers.

"Member states have sent very positive signals that could trigger the start of the final round of negotiations on the next financial period between the member states and the European Parliament this week," said commissioner Janusz Lewandowski in a statement published yesterday (22 April).

His remarks were made at the conclusion of the General Affairs Council in Luxembourg. In its report of the meeting, the Irish presidency of the Council said that member states are willing to discuss issues the Parliament has said will be essential to any agreement, including greater budget flexibility and a mid-term review, as well as extra funds for 2013.
