Commission faces court over data deal secrecy

MEPs want to launch a court case against the European Commission over a lack of transparency in negotiating data exchanges with the United States.

The Confederal Group of the European United Left/Nordic Green Left announced on 11 December that they are preparing a case for the European Court of Justice, after the Commission restricted public access to information on a EU-US agreement on data transfers for use in prosecutions.

The deal is meant to ensure that US-based firms follow European data protections laws when processing personal data from EU citizens. The Commission classified its responses to questions from members of the European Parliament’s Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs. It also told MEPs not to talk to journalists about discussions at the committee.
