The budget commissioner Günther Oettinger is touring member states to discuss out how the EU should cope with the loss of the UK’s financial contribution to the bloc.
Oettinger launched a six-month European tour on 29 September, in which he expects to gather the thoughts of 24 foreign ministers, 24 finance ministers and national parliaments on the EU’s next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF), which is due to start in 2021.
A combination of new funding sources and cuts to existing funding lines will be needed to close the Brexit hole, Oettinger said in a blog post published on the day he set off on his tour. The UK makes a net financial contribution to the bloc of about €10 billion per year.
