EU urges UK to start Brexit negotiations

Senior representatives of the EU institutions have called on the UK government to “end the uncertainty” over the country’s future relationship with the bloc.

Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament’s Brexit lead, today published a statement calling for “an answer from the British on a number of pressing questions”. These included whether the UK government’s stance on its future relationship with the EU has changed following the governing Conservative Party’s loss of its parliamentary majority in a general election on 8 June.

“Will the UK government confirm its existing position on the single market and the customs union? Is the populist illusion of restricting free movement of people more important than the fortune of the British workers, British industry and the British economy?,” he asked.
