Future UK participation in EU research programmes will depend on whether senior EU figures will seek to punish the UK in the Brexit negotiations, an MEP has said.
Hans-Olaf Henkel, a German MEP with the centre-right European Conservatives and Reformists Group, gave the warning after meeting with leaders of the UK’s elite Russell Group of research-intensive universities in Brussels on 30 May. The meeting discussed future UK-EU research cooperation.
Speaking after the meeting, Henkel said that the future of that cooperation depends on “whether the European Commission believes, or the [European] Council believes that Britain must be punished.” Henkel is a member of the Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy and a former president of the Leibniz Association of German research institutes.
