The high-level group of scientific advisers to the European Commission is losing yet another member, after mathematician Cédric Villani was elected to the French parliament.
The research commissioner Carlos Moedas, whom the SAM group reports to, confirmed Villani’s departure on Twitter on 28 June. He thanked Villani for his work for the group, and wished him good luck with his career.
Villani was elected to the French National Assembly—the lower house of France’s parliament—on 18 June. He told the journal Science that he would cease to be the director of the Henri Poincaré Institute at the Pierre and Marie Curie University in Paris, and that he was hoping to tackle problems including the efficiency of France’s research funders and the governance of its universities.
