UK pledges to bolster EU military research

The UK will help to fund an expansion of the EU’s military capabilities after Brexit by guaranteeing the payments for its defence projects, Research Europe can confirm.

Grants awarded to UK companies under the European Defence Fund before April 2019 will be underwritten by the UK government. European defence grants, which were launched on 7 June, will be guaranteed under the terms outlined in August 2016 for other EU funding, including Horizon 2020 grants, the government said.

The UK government will underwrite any defence grants awarded to UK-based companies up until April 2019, even if work for them carries on after Brexit, it said.
