A strategy to give European industry the lead in innovation, digitisation and decarbonisation was among a raft of policies announced by European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker in his 2017 state of the union address.
Juncker highlighted the industrial policy strategy as part of a vision to make European industry “stronger and more competitive” in his address to the European Parliament’s plenary session in Strasbourg on 13 September.
Evoking the 2015 emissions scandal—which erupted when the German car manufacturer Volkswagen admitted to having cheated emissions tests—as a black stain on European industry, Juncker said that the strategy would “foster industrial competitiveness, innovation and technological leadership”.
