Diplomatic efforts to share scientific expertise could smooth the path for EU expansion, Amanda Stringfellow reports.
Sandwiched between the Adriatic sea and the Slovenian border in the north-eastern corner of Italy is the port city of Trieste. Based there, alongside several research and technology institutes, is the Central European Initiative, an inter-governmental diplomatic body pursuing strategies to promote competitiveness and integration in central, eastern and south-eastern Europe.
The Central European Initiative works to deepen regional cooperation between EU and non-EU countries and aid the integration of the latter into the bloc. As well as hosting high-level political discussions, the initiative pursues focused activities based on areas of mutual interest, among them promoting research and technology collaboration between members.
