A manifesto for the next EU budget, being promoted by national research bodies from several countries, is calling for a “substantial increase” in funding for research and innovation.
The manifesto has the backing of the Italian and Spanish research councils; the CNRS, which is France’s national research centre; and Germany’s Leibniz and Helmholtz research associations. It had been endorsed by almost 1,800 individuals and organisations by the time this article was being published.
The EU’s apparent recovery from the 2008 global financial crisis, and the role of R&D in creating jobs and addressing societal challenges, are cited as reasons why funding should now be boosted.
