Research commissioner Carlos Moedas departs to praise but with an uncertain legacy
In 2015, just 100 days into his term as R&D commissioner, Carlos Moedas (pictured) sat down for dinner in Brussels with Robert-Jan Smits, then director-general of R&D at the European Commission. Smits recalls asking Moedas how he would like to be remembered, and the rookie commissioner answering as “a facilitator”—someone who brings people together.
Those who interacted with Moedas during his term, which comes to an end next month, say he undoubtedly went on to fulfil that ambition, and much more besides.
