EU plans may be scaled back amid competition for limited funding

The EU might fund just two or three of its flagship research ‘missions’ in the first years of its next R&D programme, rather than the five initially promised, multiple sources have told Research Europe.

“It’s about how much money will be there,” said Martin Russ, a member of the climate neutral and smart cities mission area advisory board. Russ said the European Commission had indicated such a scaling back was on the cards. Two other board members confirmed similar signals from the Commission, but did not want to be named.
