Research ‘in safe hands’ as Commission starts new term

Sector upbeat about new EU leaders and promise to transform bloc’s economy via research

Senior figures from research and education have joined the new European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen in praising the latest research commissioner Mariya Gabriel, as she took up her role.

Gabriel started on 1 December, after von der Leyen’s team won the final approval of the European Parliament on 27 November, securing 461 votes in favour versus 157 against.
