Manfred Weber, the leading candidate to become the next president of the European Commission, has laid out plans to prevent thousands of European lives being lost to cancer.
Weber is the presidential candidate of the European People’s Party—the largest political group in the European Parliament and therefore the most likely source of the next Commission president. His campaign promises for the May European elections, published last week, include a “European master plan against cancer”.
Specific pledges around cancer, published on 26 April, include helping universities attract and retain the best researchers and promoting research collaboration, including by setting up a “digital cancer centre”.
