The European Commission has told three American internet companies that they must share their methods for spotting fake accounts and allow independent researchers to check them.
Facebook, Google and Twitter have all been asked to update the bloc on the progress they have made in fighting disinformation ahead of the European Parliament elections in May, with fears rising that voters could be swayed by disinformation.
In a report published on 23 April, the Commission praised the voluntary actions already taken by the companies but said that they must make technical improvements to transparency features and help outsiders monitor progress.
