Commission prioritises research in five-year strategic view

Research and innovation should be among the EU’s policy priorities for 2019-24, the European Commission has recommended.

The Commission has suggested EU policy priorities for the next five years in a paper published on 30 April. These will be considered by national leaders in the European Council at a meeting in Sibiu, Romania, on 9 May, before the Council agrees on a strategic agenda at a meeting in June.

Research was included in the recommendations under the heading Competitive Europe—one of five themes. “We need to focus research and innovation on the ecological, social and economic transitions and related societal challenges,” the Commission said.
