Draft EU agenda promises ‘increased research efforts’

Leaders of EU governments are considering increasing their “research efforts” and investing more in education and skills, according to what reports claim is a leaked draft strategic agenda for 2019-24.

The document, dated 7 June, has been republished and analysed by several media and lobbying organisations. EU leaders in the European Council are due to adopt a strategic agenda for 2019-24 at a meeting on 20 and 21 June, and the document appears to build on an agenda outline published in May.

Research, innovation and education are considered in the context of the economy. The document says: “The EU must step up investment in people’s skills and education, do more to foster innovation and increase research efforts, in particular by addressing the fragmentation of European research, development and innovation.”
