Commission shake-up combines research and education roles

Rejig of portfolios has been broadly welcomed by research world

A dramatic shake up of the European Commission pushed by its incoming head has been given a cautious welcome by research groups.

Commission president-elect Ursula von der Leyen announced her plan on 10 September to merge the jobs of research commissioner and education commissioner into a single role on 1 November.
