An EU commissioner with responsibility for industry, digital, space and defence has been proposed to work alongside the role for research, innovation and education and to oversee a new Commission department.
The role, “commissioner for internal market”, was proposed by Commission president-elect Ursula von der Leyen on 10 September. She proposed that it be filled by French former liberal MEP and bureaucrat Sylvie Goulard (pictured).
In a mission letter to Goulard, von der Leyen said that the role, which would start from 1 November, would help to drive European industrial innovation and competitiveness and have three linked focuses.
