The head of the European Commission’s R&D department has said that it will not be combined with the education department even though the two are set to be overseen by a single commissioner from November.

Jean-Eric Paquet said at an event hosted by the news organisation Science Business in Brussels on 10 September that the two departments would remain independent under plans revealed by Commission president-elect Ursula von der Leyen earlier that day.

Paquet said that both departments, as well as the Commission’s Joint Research Centre evidence service, were to be overseen by the commissioner-designate for innovation and youth Mariya Gabriel, who is currently the digital commissioner. Vladimír Šucha, the top official in the JRC, announced on 6 September that he would be retiring from the Commission in October.
