MEPs push for boosts to R&D and education in 2021 EU budget

Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ likely to benefit if Parliament’s call for extra €15bn is heeded

The European Parliament’s budget committee has backed a 2021 EU spending plan that is €15 billion larger than that proposed by the European Commission, and has named researchers as being among those who would benefit in the unlikely event of the proposal being adopted.

The Parliament said on 28 October that “most of” the extra money sought by the committee would go to 15 programmes that the Parliament considers priorities for 2021-27, including the Horizon Europe and Erasmus+ programmes for R&D and academic mobility.
