Carlos Moedas and Jean-Pierre Bourguignon denounce emergency powers granted to Hungarian executive

Former EU research and political leaders have joined more than 70 luminaries in condemning the Hungarian parliament for granting the incumbent government emergency powers to combat Covid-19. They said all Europeans should see the move as “a fundamental threat to our common interest”.

Immediate past EU R&D commissioner Carlos Moedas (pictured left) and former European Research Council president Jean-Pierre Bourguignon (pictured right) were among the signatories of an open letter denouncing the move, published in various European newspapers on 20 April. Other signatories included immediate past European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker and vice-president for competitiveness Jyrki Katainen.
