EU R&D spending stuck around 2.3% of GDP

Spending trend is “not good enough” as Europe is “treading water”, says academic leader

The EU’s R&D spending rose by 6 per cent in a year to €328 billion in 2021, new data has revealed, but is stuck at around 2.3 per cent of GDP.

According to data released by the EU’s statistics agency Eurostat on 29 November, R&D spending in 2021 as a percentage of GDP was 2.27 per cent, which was a slight decrease on 2.31 per cent the year before.
