Academics at risk

University groups have welcomed what they say is a clear signal from EU education ministers that the bloc’s governments support the creation of an EU scheme for aiding academics at risk. A text adopted by the ministers this month said the EU should become “a safe haven for the freedom of scientific research and democratic values” by using European and national schemes to help higher education institutions “welcome students, researchers and academics whose freedom is under threat”. The European University Association said this was a “clear commitment for a European scheme to support researchers and students at risk”.
