EU’s lack of legal power in education has caused ‘outright misery’, say universities

MEPs want bloc to have equal say with member states on education, as on research

University groups are backing a push for the EU to gain equal power with member states over education, saying the bloc’s lack of authority in the area has caused them “outright misery”. 

The move would bring education in line with research, which has long been a so-called ‘shared competence’. The lack of EU power over education has caused headaches for universities, whose activities fall into both areas.
