Formal talks are set to take place about Japan and South Korea joining the EU’s research and innovation programme, Horizon Europe, after the bloc’s member states approved the move to the next phase of discussions. The two countries will join Canada in late-stage talks with the EU, which include decisions on financial contributions. As with Canada and New Zealand, which was the first far-flung country to agree association to an EU R&I programme, negotiations with the two Asian nations will be for access to only pillar two of Horizon Europe, which funds collaborative projects intended to tackle societal challenges and boost industrial competitiveness.
