Proposal for 2024 EU budget is too tight, MEPs complain

Commission urged to revise rules limiting funds available for researchers and students

MEPs have raised concerns over the proposed EU budget for 2024, which they say is too limited and will erode the bloc’s ability to pay for priorities such as university exchanges and support for researchers.

The European Commission set out its proposal for the 2024 budget yesterday, including a 3.7 per cent increase for the EU’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme and a 1.8 per cent increase for Erasmus+, the bloc’s academic mobility programme.
