The EU should more than double the budget of its next research and innovation programme and protect that funding from being siphoned off, according to the European University Association, the European Association of Research and Technology Organisations and Science Europe, an association of research funding and performing organisations. In a joint letter, they said the successor to the €95.5 billion 2021-27 Horizon Europe R&I programme should have a budget of €200bn to help the EU tackle challenges including climate change. “We highlight the need to ringfence the programme’s budget to safeguard it from yearly discussions…and shifts between the different programme components and EU priorities,” they added.
