Arctic research collaboration ‘in peril’

Analysts warn that an absence of dialogue with Russia is threatening science in the region

Experts have warned that Arctic research cooperation is “in peril” after Russia threatened to pull out of a key organisation that promotes scientific collaboration in the Far North.

Earlier this month Russia threatened to pull out of the Arctic Council—a regional organisation designed to foster peaceful cooperation and scientific research—if its interests were not met. The move comes after two years of frozen relations on the council following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
