Generative AI tools are challenging research integrity—and not all national funders are keeping up
Just under a year ago, a scandal broke out in Australia when allegations surfaced that at least one peer reviewer had been using generative artificial intelligence—of the kind made world famous by ChatGPT—in grant assessments for the Australian Research Council.
The smoking gun was said to have been the words “regenerate response” at the bottom of a piece of assessor feedback. Within weeks, the ARC banned the use of AI in grant reviews.
