The European Council has delayed the completion of the controversial data protection regulation to 2015, which would affect medical research in Europe.
The conclusion of EU Council summit, held on 24 and 25 October, says that the data protection framework should be completed “by 2015”—not spring 2014, ahead of the Parliamentary elections, as an earlier draft proposed.
Euractiv reports that the change was made due to pressure from the UK, Hungary, the Czech Republic and Sweden not to rush the package, despite the shorter timeframe being supported by France, Germany and Poland.
