Commission urged to reject GM maize plans

Anti-GM lobby groups have called on the European Commission not to grant permission for a strain of genetically modified maize to be grown in Europe.

Statements from Greenpeace and Friends of the Earth published on 31 October say that the crop could harm butterflies and moths, and that recent scientific studies “call into question” its benefits.

The Commission is to decide on 6 November whether to allow the crop, GM maize 1507, produced by biotech company Pioneer, to be grown in Europe.
