Parliament’s research committee supports data re-use

The European Parliament’s committee on industry, research and energy has approve a draft law to allow companies to re-use public data, including information generated from research.

The proposed legislation grants private companies and citizens access to existing data, meaning they do not have to reproduce it themselves. In addition to research data, the law would cover information such as maps, weather data, infrastructure listings and digitised books.

The Itre committee amended the Commission’s original proposal to ensure companies can access the majority of data for free, or for a minimal charge at most.
