Spanish region bans fracking

Politicians in the northern Spanish region of Cantabria have voted to ban hydraulic fracturing because of environmental concerns, reports the Euractiv news website.

A bill to ban the process was passed unanimously in a vote by the regional parliament on 8 April. The central government had hoped that use of the technique, also known as fracking, could allow Spain to access shale gas reserves in the region and boost the economy, reports Euractiv.
