Declaration demands ‘responsible’ research

European countries should pay more attention to the principles of responsible research and innovation, according to a declaration issued after a meeting of researchers and policymakers in Rome.

The Italian presidency of the Council of Ministers said on 21 November that attendants at its conference on research and innovation had signed the Rome Declaration—a document developed during the meeting. The document outlines how principles of responsible research and innovation, or RRI, result in better application of research results for societal progress.

The Rome Declaration states that Europe needs a monitoring system for RRI progress, which includes improving the gender balance in science, including citizens in the research process and dealing sensibly with risk. The signatories of the declaration also say that funders need to become more adventurous when funding public engagement and business partnerships.
