Parliament told to prioritise antimicrobial resistance

EU institutions and governments must band together to tackle antimicrobial resistance, a European Parliament hearing has been warned.

Antimicrobial resistance, in which pathogens evolve to stop antibiotics working against them, is the “biggest global health threat” facing mankind, the Parliament heard on 27 June.

The warning was issued by José Inácio Faria, a Portuguese MEP from the European People’s Party, at a hearing organised jointly by the EPP and the Socialists & Democrats group. The hearing was held in anticipation of extra measures to tackle AMR being announced by the European Commission later this week.
