Spanner in works for commercial exploitation of data

A European Parliament committee has voted against the right to carry out text and data mining for commercial purposes, in opposition to many research organisations and businesses.

The Internal Market and Consumer Protection Committee (IMCO) passed its opinion on EU copyright reform yesterday. Against the wishes of the opinion’s rapporteur, British social-democratic MEP Catherine Stihler, the committee rejected amendments that would have broadened a proposed right for research organisations to carry out text and data mining only for scientific purposes.
