Drug regulator seeks views on antimicrobial misuse

The European Medicines Agency has launched a consultation on the off-label use of antimicrobials in veterinary medicine.

The misuse of antibiotics by vets could increase the risk of antimicrobial resistance, the EMA warned in a reflection paper it published on 25 July. The paper, which aims to define off-label use and understand the reasons for it, has been opened to comments from the public.

Off-label use of a medicine is use in ways other than those authorised and included in its product information. It is only permitted under specific circumstances, such as when there are no available medicines that have been authorised to treat rare conditions or species, but is nevertheless widespread in veterinary medicine.
