The European Commission has proposed criteria for identifying potentially harmful chemicals in biocidal products, which include disinfectants and insect repellents.
The criteria, which were adopted on 4 September, are intended to identify chemicals that can interfere with human and animal hormone systems. These so-called endocrine disrupters can cause health problems including cancer and cognitive disabilities.
The Commission’s proposal would align the scientific criteria for biocidal products with those for pesticides and plant protection products. EU member state governments agreed on criteria for pesticides and plant protection products on 4 July, and will now examine the criteria for biocidal products alongside the European Parliament.
