Medicines agency ‘seriously concerned’ about relocation

As few as 6 per cent of the European Medicines Agency’s staff would be willing to relocate to certain countries bidding to host the agency after Brexit, according to a survey.

A substantial loss of staff resulting from an unpopular relocation could have “important consequences for public health in the EU”, the EMA said in a press release on 26 September. The agency is set to leave London once the UK exits the EU, which could be as early as March 2019.

A survey carried out by the EMA found that there are eight countries bidding to host the agency to which fewer than 30 per cent of its staff would be willing to relocate. With this degree of losses, the agency would be unable to function, the EMA said—and since “there is no backup” agency, public health would suffer.
