Mike Pompeo seeks to bolster White House cordon sanitaire around Chinese telecoms company

Europe “must put security first” when it comes to next-generation mobile internet, and “not give control of their critical infrastructure to Chinese tech giants like Huawei, or ZTE”, according to the United States’ secretary of state, Mike Pompeo.

Huawei, which has close links with many universities throughout Europe, has invested significant resources in 5G R&D in recent years. It has bid for infrastructure contracts across Europe, but questions have been raised over security in countries including Norway and the UK.
