Data chief warns of potential loss of exchange with UK

EU told to prepare for ‘all eventualities’, as UK promises to maintain data standards

The EU’s data watchdog has warned that “any substantial deviation” by the UK from EU data protection rules would impede data sharing between the country and the bloc.

In a report to the European Commission on 24 February, the independent European Data Protection Supervisor Wojciech Wiewiórowski said changes to UK rules that lower protection levels would be an “important obstacle” to the Commission deciding that the UK offers the same level of data protection as the EU.
