Academic groups sound alarm over EU digital legislation

Planned rules on services and data “will negatively impact research and education”, sector organisations say

Groups representing European universities and research libraries have sounded the alarm over planned EU legislation of digital services, data and artificial intelligence, saying they fear the new rules will harm academia.

“We are concerned that certain aspects of [the plans] will negatively impact the research and education sectors, as they conflict with key notions of scientific collaboration, open science and knowledge-based societies,” the groups said in a joint statement published on 24 January.
