The European Food Safety Authority has appointed a chief scientist to fill the role previously held by Marta Hugas, who retired earlier this year.

Carlos Gonçalo das Neves (pictured), director of research and internationalisation at the Norwegian Veterinary Institute, will take over on 1 November.

Das Neves, a Portuguese and Norwegian national, is known for his work in animal health, biodiversity and emerging threats. In addition to his position at the NVI, he is also a professor in the faculty of health sciences at the Artic University of Norway.

“We are very excited to welcome Carlos Gonçalo das Neves as our new chief scientist,” Efsa’s executive director Bernhard Url said on 17 August.

“His international experience will be a strong asset for Efsa in our mission to build lasting partnerships in the fields of food safety, [health] and sustainability.”
