MEPs take step towards creation of EU health data space

Data sharing expected to fuel health research, despite Parliament planning opt-out mechanism for patients

The adoption of new EU rules enabling researchers to access health data across borders has moved a step closer, after two parliamentary committees voted in favour.

The European Commission proposed setting up a European Health Data Space in 2022. As well as giving EU citizens rights to access prescriptions, imagery and laboratory tests across borders, the proposals would create a new legal framework for using health-related data in healthcare and research.
