Commission official says science must first “progress sufficiently”, in response to citizens’ petition
It is not yet possible to set a timeframe for ending the use of animals in EU research, a European Commission official has said, in response to a petition calling for such a plan.
The European Citizens’ Initiative petition that called for a phaseout date to be set garnered over 1.4 million signatures of support from the public, but groups of universities and research institutes said that setting such a date “would severely confine European research, with detrimental effects for the health of European citizens”.
