Call for evaluation of animal-testing alternatives

Sweden’s publicly-funded projects to reduce the use of animal testing in research should be evaluated every five years to determine whether they are succeeding, a government-commissioned report has recommended.

Sweden’s national science council allocates 13 million kroner (€1.5m) annually to projects promoting research using the 3R method: replacing, reducing and refining the use of animal testing. The pharmaceutical industry adds 1m kroner a year to the pot.
