Long-term planning cuts success rates

Longer funding cycles for research projects in Sweden have resulted in a drop in grant application success rates, according to the Swedish research council Vetenskapsrådet.

The amount of funds that will be released in 2014 has decreased for all of the areas, but the natural sciences, engineering and health are particularly affected by the changes, the council stated.

“In 2010, we changed the project-funding duration from three years to four years for the natural sciences and engineering, which has led to a 5 per cent reduction in the success rate this year,” says Sven Staftström, head of natural sciences and engineering at Vetenskapsrådet.
