Europe must not forsake basic research, warns Björklund

European countries must continue to invest in basic research and not be blinded by the potential for financial rewards from applied research, Sweden’s research and education minister Jan Björklund has said.

Björklund made the comment following a meeting with the EU’s Competitiveness Council on 18 February, which focused on research policy. He said that while Europe has committed to strengthening funding for research and innovation, it is yet to decide how to spend the money.
