Lithuania joins ESS

The Lithuanian government has approved the country’s participation in the European Spallation Source.

In a statement on 18 May, the ESS—the neutron-based particle accelerator under construction in Lund—said that the Lithuanian government would begin formal negotiations with host countries Sweden and Denmark about its terms of participation. The announcement was made following a visit by Lithuanian science minister Dainius Pavalkis to the ESS on 7 May.

“Initial discussions indicate a contribution of at least 0.45 per cent of the €1.84 billion project, with up to 70 per cent of that in the form of in-kind activities,” the ESS said in the statement. In-kind contributions include providing equipment and research staff for the facility.
